The meeting will be taking place at 12:00 pm in Hawaii, 3:00 pm in Denver and 5:00 pm in New York.

This meeting was recorded and can be viewed at - http://experts.adobeconnect.com/p8av4y5yyey/

In this presentation, Joseph Labrecque shows you how to use the Feathers and Starling user interface frameworks along with Stage3D to build out mobile applications with Adobe AIR.

We’ll cover the history of Stage3D and Starling, see how to get both Starling and Feathers libraries integrated within a Flash Builder project, configure the Starling stage, and instantiate Feathers components within Starling classes to provide functional user interface elements within both games and apps.

Mobile AIR has Stage3D capabilities and a set of solid frameworks to use it easily – no excuses!

Introduction to Starling

For the first meeting of the Hawaii Flash User Group for 2014 will be an introduction to Starling given by Dave Gamez.

The meeting will be happing at 2:00pm Hawaiian Time, which is 7:00pm East Coast time, such as in New York. The time will be 4:00 pm on the West Coast such as California.

What is Starling?

Starling is an ActionScript 3 2D framework developed on top of Stage3D. Starling is mainly designed for game development, but could be used for many other use cases. Starling makes it possible to write fast GPU accelerated applications without having to touch the low‐level Stage3D APIs.

Why Starling?

Most Flash developers want to be able to leverage GPU acceleration (through Stage3D) without the need to write such higher‐level frameworks and dig into the low‐level Stage3D APIs. Starling is completely designed after the Flash Player APIs and abstracts the complexity of Stage3D and allows easy and intuitive programming for everyone.

Obviously Starling is for ActionScript  3 developers, especially those involved in 2D game development; of course you will need to have a basic understanding of ActionScript 3. By its design (lightweight, flexible and simple), Starling can be used also be used for other use cases like UI programming. That said, everything is designed to be as intuitive as possible, so any Java™ or .Net™ developer will get the hang of it quickly as well.

Talk Story

This will be the last meeting for 2013. I think that it would be good to talk story so I can hear what you would like to see in the new year. The meeting is 12:00 pm Hawaii time.

This meeting will not have any demos or anything that we normally do, just a chance for us to get together and discuss what direction the group will take in 2014.

It will remain about Flash, but do you want to see some design meetings, html5, etc.

Talk:

Getting Started with 3D Flash Game Development
“Hell, it’s about time!” We’ve been waiting for hardware accelerated 3D content in the browser for so long! Using the latest Flash Player 11 Stage3D technology, we can now finally create stunning 3D games and interactive applications we’ve always dreamed of. In this talk, Michael Plank from Pro 3 Games will upgrade your skills to the third dimension. Starting off with some basics about 3D geometry, shading, lighting and texturing, he will share his knowledge about moving art and development workflows from 2D to 3D and which kind of new tools, libraries and techniques are involved in this process.

Michael will demonstrate the work pipeline, starting with a concept art to finally interacting with the 3D asset in real time, using examples from the Flash 3D action game Starforce Delta (www.starforcedelta.com), he and his team are currently developing. The pros and cons of other 3D browser technologies like Unity and WebGL are covered at the end of the talk.

Bio:
Michael Plank is Co-Founder and CTO at Pro 3 Games, an Austrian game development startup company currently developing Starforce Delta, the most action-packed 3D game on the web and tablets.

Michael has been hooked on creating games since the day he wrote his very first line of code. He received a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, specializing on component-based game architecture for building highly scalable and dynamic game engines.

Previously Michael has been working for Interactive Pioneers, formerly known as Powerflasher, as product owner and evangelist of FDT as well as software engineer for the Powerflasher agency.

Next Hawaii Flash Group Meeting is on Away 3D, Cross-platform 3D to the Max!

Agenda
Cross-platform 3D to the Max!
With so many of today’s digital platforms having built in 3D capabilities as standard, there has never been a better time to create 3D games for the casual user. But striking a good balance between performance and quality is something that requires a little more knowledge of the underlying systems to get right. From best practice design to neat coding tricks, this session explores the techniques at our disposal for wringing the best results out of any GPU accelerated system, using the popular open source framework Away3D to provide illustrative examples.

Speaker
Rob Bateman is an internationally renowned web developer and open source advocate with a passion for high-end interactive content and games. His main focus lies in and around the widely established 3D graphics engine Away3D. In 2012 Rob setup The Away Foundation – a non-profit organisation specializing in the production and maintenance of a variety of open source libraries for use on the web and mobile devices.
